Ghislain, the golfer of the Globe-Setters, is back from his trip to Portugal. He shares his experience at the Oitavos dunes golf course in Cascais, a seaside resort near Lisbon.
The city of Cascais is famous for its numerous and superb golf courses including the golf course of the Oitavos dunes. So I tested two of the best golf courses in the area. The first, the Quinta da Marinha golf course, was not disappointing with its eighteen holes designed by Robert Trent Jones. But it was the second that really caught my attention. I had spotted him a long time ago and when I came to Cascais my first objective was to go there.
The Oitavos dunes golf course, a splendid domain
Indeed the golf of the Oitavos dunes is famous since it is considered as the sixty-fifth most beautiful golf in the world. There are only two others in Europe on this list. Designed by the famous architect Arthur Hills, it features a single eighteen-hole course that stretches first on the slope of a hill, then on the dunes to the bottom of the estate.
The landscapes offered by this route between sand dunes and umbrella pines are exceptional. And this design golf course, perfectly embracing the natural beauty of the site, is also the first in Europe to receive the Certified Signature Sanctuary – Gold (environmental protection certificate). The view of the Atlantic is extraordinary. I remember the ninth hole in particular. It is a small par three from where the view of the Sintra mountain, plunging down to the sea towards Cabo da Roca, is breathtaking.
A very technical course
The golf of the Oitavos dunes requires a great technique. A wind coming from the sea constantly sweeps the holes of the course which makes it difficult to anticipate the trajectory of the ball. Moreover the greens are rather narrow and very sloping. You need a great mastery to enjoy it. But it is a real golf test and a challenge that I loved to take up, I who am persevering and attached to the technique. What’s more, in this splendid setting!
For golf enthusiasts, the golf of the Oitavos dunes is a must in Cascais. Ranked among the most beautiful in the world, it deserves its place. It can be a bit difficult for beginners but it’s a challenge that any golfer would enjoy taking up!
