Andros, the largest island in the Bahamas, is about 160 km long and 64 km wide. It is a low island, cut by many saltwater streams, rivers and deep bays. A large part of Andros is covered with pine and hardwood forests. The eastern margin of Andros is bordered by the tongue of the ocean, a 1800 m deep chasm that separates Andros from New Providence. A fringing coral reef extends for more than 230 km along the Tong of the Ocean, making it one of the longest in the world. On all other sides, Andros is surrounded by the shallow waters of the Great Bahama Bank.
